Basconia Finding Creative Ways To Get Results

Basconia have roared to 4th in the table and have been in sensational form (AC)

The arrival of Patxi Salinas over the summer brought high expectations for CD Basconia. As is usually the case, the heavy squad turnover saw the team start the season slowly but it didn’t last long. In time the new manager was able to find the right balance and Basconia have been in sensational form since the middle of November with just two losses in 15 games.

Turning the corner hasn’t been an easy process. Ruben Azcona’s ongoing injury issues, along with the lack of a proven striker to take his place, has left Basconia with more questions than answers. Fortunately, Salinas has had a few creative solutions to address the position that have worked out well for the most part.

Winger Jon Cabo has featured in a False 9 role on a number of occasions while Youssouf Diarra and Jon Guruzeta have done the same. Even Josu Juste, who is a more natural forward, though also plays winger, has also lined up at the top of the attack. The four have combined to score 20 goals for Basconia this season despite playing out of position on occasion.

Salinas has also found ways to cover for key players being called up to Bilbao Athletic at times with Beñat Prados and Aitor Paredes doing so regularly as of late. The return of Gorka Agirre has given the manger more options in the midfielder while the Naveira brothers have been used in several different positions over the past few months.

In light of the various difficult situations, Patxi Salinas has done an incredible job to lead Basconia to the 4th place spot in the table. The Basauritarras have already scored 38 goals while conceded 26 and look poised to finish the season strong. Several players have shown that they will be ready to make the jump to Bilbao Athletic in the summer.

With football having now been suspended in Spain, Basconia will not be training in order to protect the players, staff, and others safe during the current outbreak. The time off will give the squad an opportunity to recover from various injuries and, once football does resume, Basconia will be hoping to secure one of the best finishes in recent history.
