Yeray was raised in the Basque city of Barakaldo, roughly 10 minutes from Bilbao and was an Athletic fan from day one. He began his development with Barakaldo and Danok Bat before joining Lezama in 2008 when he was 12 years old. The defender really began to make a name for himself when he competed in the 2012-2013 NextGen Series and quickly made his way to Bilbao Athletic where he became a budding young star. Yeray was promoted to the first team in 2016 and made his debut on 15 September in a Europa League loss to Sassuolo. Since joining the senior squad Yeray has had two battles against cancer and says that his victory over the disease has helped him grow as a footballer and as a person. Over the past few year’s he’s established himself as one of the best defenders in La Liga and signed a contract renewal with Athletic on 18 July, 2019.
Yeray is under contract through 2026 and his deal contains a €70 million release clause.
