Iker Muniain “We are really upset about this loss at home”

Iker Muniain lamented Athletic’s failure to create chances (AC)

Athletic hit a new low on Thursday night. Even with Cadíz having two players sent off the Lions still lost 1-0, registering a record fourth straight defeat at San Mamés. As expected, the players and manager were heavily criticized following the embarrassing performance.

“We are really upset about this loss at home,” captain Iker Muniain said after the game. “We came from a good game at Ipurua with those three points. Today we hoped to extend those good feelings. It was difficult, a game with few clear chances. The game was decided by an unfortunate play in which we scored an own goal. It was a shame, but this has just begun and we have to continue.”

Although Athletic controlled possession in the opening 45 minutes, Cadíz were comfortable in defense. The Lions failed to create much of anything in attack and couldn’t find a way through even after the two red cards.

“I think we carried the weight of the game in the first half. We tried to get balls into the box from outside and also from inside. Cadíz were organized and structured. Sometimes when you are superior more spaces open up and you have more options. We looked for it, we tried, we put crosses into the box, but there was nothing. You also have to give credit to Cadíz. With two more players we weren’t able to take advantage. It’s a pity that we were able to add three points, not even one, because we had a clear advantage.”

Thursday’s loss was more than a missed opportunity. The defeat was inexcusable and now the team must respond quickly. “It’s a hard blow to lose at home, but we cannot be more pessimistic than necessary,” Muniain added. “We have to raise our heads. Tomorrow we train and on Sunday we have another fight with Alavés in a Derby.” The trip to Mendizorrta is already a must win game just a few weeks into the season.
