Yuri Berchiche Returns To Training Ahead Of La Liga Opener

Yuri Berchiche was back in training on Thursday (AC)

Yuri Berchiche has been training separately from his teammates since the first day of preseason. Still carrying a groin injury from the previous campaign, the left-back has been following a individualized regime with hopes of being able to play in the opening game of the La Liga season.

So far Berchiche has been kept out of Athletic’s two friendlies against Logroñés and Alavés. The 30-year-old will also miss Friday’s trip to Real Oviedo. However, there was finally some encouraging news today as Berchiche was able to join his teammates in training for the first time this summer.

At this point it’s unclear if Berchiche will be cleared for the league opener next Friday against Granada. If not, Mikel Balenziaga would be expected to take his place in the lineup. Even if Yuri Berchiche isn’t able to play, he should be back in the team for the following fixture two weeks later.
