Iñigo Martinez Back In Training At Lezama

Iñigo Martínez returned to training on Thursday (AC)

Injuries and illnesses have been an unfortunate part of Athletic’s preseason since the first day the players reported back to Lezama on 11 August. In addition to six players testing positive for COVID-19, a number of injuries have sidelined members of the squad as well. Gaizka Garitano has had to make do without several key players so far, but there’s finally some good news.

Iñigo Martínez returned to training on Thursday after recovering from a hip injury. The defender originally missed training on 18 August due to the issue, but was able to take part in half of Thursday’s session at Lezama. Over the coming days Martínez will be fully incorporated back into the group, but has already been ruled out for Saturday’s friendly against Logroñés.

During Thursday’s press conference following training Gaizka Garitano also explained that the other players currently dealing with injuries - Yuri Berchiche, Peru Nolaskoain, and Mikel Vesga - should all be ready by the start of the season. For now only Ibai Gómez will be unavailable as the winger is set to miss the first few weeks of the La Liga campaign with a fractured clavicle.
