Unai Simón Signs Renewal With Athletic Club Through 2025 With No Release Clause
Unai Simón has always been outspoken about his commitment to Athletic Club. Since becoming the starting goalkeeper at San Mamés the Lezama product has established himself as one of Europe’s best while also attracting the interest of other clubs. However, Simón has made it clear multiple times that he has no desire to leave his boyhood club and has proved it by signing a new contract.
Athletic officially announced on Wednesday in a special video that Simón has renewed his contract through 2025. The two sides had been in negotiations since before the pandemic and were determined to finalize an agreement before the start of the new season. Along with extended his deal, Simón made a big statement by not including a release clause in his new contract.
Simón is the 6th Athletic player to sign a contract without a release clause. Iker Muniain started the trend back in 2018 which was followed by Óscar De Marcos, Mikel Balenziaga, Ibai Gómez, and Raúl García. Still just 23 years old, Simón is the first young star to fully commit his future to Athletic by not including a release clause.
“I’ve been here since I was 14 years old, since I was a Cadete,” Simón told AthleticTV after signing his renewal. “Being here until 2025 is a dream for me. I’m proud of the trust that the club has placed in me. It’s a complete day because it coincides with the anniversary of my debut and the call of Luis Enrique. It’s a beautiful and very special day.”
Thursday was indeed a special day for Simón. In addition to signing a historic contract with Athletic, he was also called up to the Spain National Team for the first time in his young career. Unai Simón has played just 48 games for Athletic since making his debut, but is already one of the best goalkeepers in football and will have the chance to compete for the starting role in the Selection while also building his legacy with the Zurigorri.
