Ibai Gómez Suffers Clavicle Fracture In Training

The list of injuries continues to grow for Athletic. Just days after Doctor Josean Lekue gave an update on the squad, confirming that only Yuri Berchiche and Peru Nolaskoain were nursing injuries, more players have been sidelined. Yesterday the club revealed that Iñigo Martínez missed training with a hip muscle injury and today Ibai Gómez was the latest to go down.

Gómez suffered a fracture to his right clavicle during Wednesday’s morning training session at Lezama. It’s unclear just how the injury occurred, but the winger has “undergone a specific immobilization” following medical tests.

The club also explained that the assessment period for the injury is still pending, which means that the doctors are waiting to decide whether or not Gómez will have to undergo surgery. Either way, he will miss the rest of preseason and will likely be unavailable for the start of the La Liga campaign. Depending on whether or not Gómez needs surgery he could miss anywhere from six to twelve weeks.

“This is nothing,” Gómez said on social media. “Thank you all, as always, see you soon.” Ibai Gómez is coming off of a disappointing season where he featured just 20 times and scored one goal. The 30-year-old had hoped to play a more important role in the team in his first full season back at San Mamés and will be hoping to turn things around in the upcoming campaign once he’s recovered from the clavicle injury.
