Return To Lezama Postponed For Youth Teams

Youth teams will return to Lezama later than planned due to health concerns (AC)

Several months ago as professional football was working to return amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, youth football across Spain was canceled. The remaining games were never played and champions were crowned based on which teams were at the top of their respective tables before the stoppage.

For Athletic, youth football is one of the pillars of the club. Developing local talent has always played a massive role in Athletic’s success and there has been excitement to see the teams return to Lezama this month to begin preseason training. Unfortunately, the next generation of players will have to wait a little bit longer.

After reports from ETB on Monday which claimed that some unknown players from Basconia and the lower levels of Lezama had tested positive for COVID-19, Athletic has issued an announcement that preseason training has been postponed for all youth teams.

The Juvenil and Cadete teams, which were scheduled to return to Lezama as early as 10 August, will “delay the start of their training for a few days pending the evolution of the health situation and the protocols that can be established from the different sports organizations.” Meanwhile, the younger teams (Infantil and Alevín) won’t report back to Lezama until September.

As of now both Bilbao Athletic and Basconia are still scheduled to begin preseason training on 20 and 17 August respectively. Athletic have not confirmed whether or not players have indeed tested positive.
