The past year has been nothing short of a rollercoaster for Lezama starlet Oihan Sancet. After an impressive season with Juvenil A, the midfielder was called up to train with the first team last summer and before eventually settling in with Bilbao Athletic. Just a few weeks into the season he would suffer a torn ACL but managed to make his return before the campaign was over and once again showed his immense quality and potential.

Sancet was once again called up over the summer where he trained under Gaizka Garitano and was able to make his first team debut against Barcelona in the opening game of the season. Since then, the 19-year-old has been starting for Bilbao Athletic in order to play regular minutes and his exceptional performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

Having already represented Spain’s U19 team, Sancet was recently included in the U21 squad a for the first time and made his official debut in Thursday night’s 1-1 draw against Germany. Manager Luis de la Fuente, a former Athletic player and Lezama coach, has openly praised Sancet as a sensation talent and the midfielder is expected to get more chances with the U21 team moving forward.

With Sancet fully recovered from ACL surgery and showing incredible quality, he is also expected to get more opportunities with the Athletic first team this season. “Oihan is a young player who didn’t play for a year because of a serious injury”, Garitano explained after Sancet featured in the team’s recent loss to Celta Vigo. “We wanted him to play with Bilbao Athletic the last month to have minutes. He needs time because he is a player for the future and we also hope he can be a player for the present.” Oihan Sancet could play an important role down the road as Athletic look to qualify for Europe.
