Athletic In Serious Talks To Sign Alex Berenguer, Unwilling To Meet €15 Million Price Tag

Athletic are in serious talks to sign Alex Berenguer before the transfer window closes (Torino)

With less than one week until the transfer window slams shut talks between Athletic and Torino are finally picking up. The Basques have been closely following Alex Berenguer for a few years now, but only opened serious negotiations within the past few days. Gaizka Garitano asked the club for reinforcements, highlighting a winger as the biggest need, but a deal won’t be easy.

Torino have placed a €15 million price tag on Berenguer, though sources claim they would be willing to accept €12 million. Funds are limited for Athletic following the pandemic. The Basques have no intentions of paying more than €8 million to sign the 25-year-old. More importantly, the emergence of Jon Morcillo gives Athletic reason to be cautious and not break the bank for Berenguer.

According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Berenguer wants to return to Spain. The versatile attacker is said to be excited about a possible move to San Mamés. If Alex Berenguer is signed, he would to sign a contract for at least four years and receive slightly higher wages than what he’s currently earning at Torino. The two clubs have until 5 October to finalize an agreement.
