Bilbao Athletic were looking to build on last week’s win over Vitoria and pick up their first victory on the road under manager Aritz Solabarrieta when they traveled to face off with Tudelano. The Ciudad de Tudela was weather beaten leaving many rough patches on the field that both teams would have to play though and it led to a lot of sloppy football from both sides.
Asier Benito was able to give Bilbao Athletic the lead in the 30th minute with a back post finish from an Asier Villalibre assist and the team immediately looked for more. Villalibre, Unai Vencedor, and others all had efforts that didn’t find the back of the net but the Katxorros had been the better side when the halftime whistle finally sounded with their 1-0 lead intact.
Tudelano responded just minutes into the second half when a free kick was headed into past Unai Etxebarria to level the score and give momentum back to the home side. Iñigo Vicente had the chance to pull back ahead but his shot skipped wide of the goal and Tudelano made their visitors pay for the missed chance when a ball over the top of the defense was put into the back of the net in the 54th minute.
Chances came and went for Bilbao Athletic who, despite great attacks, just couldn’t find the equalizer. Tudelano would then find their third goal in the 72nd minute when they took advantage of defenders out of position to put a shot between the legs of the goalkeeper. Unai Vencedor would finally pull a goal back in the 83rd minute with a fabulous free kick goal, his second of the season, but it was too late to complete the comeback as Bilbao Athletic fell 3-2 to Tudelano.
Sunday’s loss saw Bilbao Athletic finish the weekend 9th in the league table and 6 points off of the last promotional playoff spot. The goal of the team is still to qualify for the playoffs and they will have the chance to climb higher in the standings on Sunday when they host Gimnástica at Lezama in what will be another difficult game for the Kumeak.
