Following last weekend’s big win over Cultural Leonesa, Bilbao Athletic traveled to Salamanca on Saturday with hopes of moving three points closer to the top of the table. Injuries continued to add difficulty for Joseba Etxeberria’s side who faced an opponent in need of a positive result to remain in the fight for a top four finish.
Salamanca started strong and forced Ander Iru to make an impressive save early on but the hosts wouldn’t be denied for long. Just 10 minutes into the game Galván would score directly form a free kick to give Salamanca a 1-0 lead and send Estadio Helmántico into celebration.
After going behind Bilbao Athletic quickly took control of the game and responded six minutes later when Imanol played a corner kick to the top of the box where Unai Vencedor was left alone. The midfielder settled the ball and blasted a shot into the top corner to level the score with his third goal of the season.
Momentum swung in favor of the Kumeak who began looking for more goals and had several opportunities to take the lead before halftime. Imanol sent a shot over the crossbar from the center of the area and Vencedor forced an amazing save with a free kick effort, though a second goal would prove elusive.
Bilbao Athletic maintained control after the break and nearly went ahead on the scoreboard when Oihan Sancet was played through the defense. The midfielder ran into the box and cut back onto his right foot before putting a shot wide of the far post. Salamanca would have a flurry of chances in the second half from crosses into the box but were unable to finish in front of goal while the Cachorros failed to create any more real opportunities despite enjoying more possession.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw with both sides earning a valuable point. Bilbao Athletic will now turn their attention to Tudelano who will visit Lezama next Sunday with a chance to pick up an important victory and move one step closer to the promotional playoffs.
