Bilbao Athletic’s recent form is concerning. The Kumeak had recorded just one win heading into Friday’s match against Leioa but were hopeful of picking up three important points against one of the weakest teams in the league. However, Joseba Etxeberria’s side were unable to return home with a victory as they fell 1-0 at Sarriena.
The hosts would only need three minutes to decide the match. Jon Madrazo put Leioa ahead 1-0 with a volley from outside the box following a corner which would prove to be the winning goal. Bilbao Athletic dominated the remainder of the first half with several chances for Asier Córdoba, Gorka Guruzeta, and Juan Artola but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
Bilbao Athletic continued to attack in the second half with Jesús Areso and Aitor Paredes both having promising headers, but the equalizer never came. It was the third time in the last five matches that Bilbao Athletic have been held scoreless and extremely disappointing considering how many opportunities were created throughout the game. With just one win over that stretch the Cachorros are in danger of falling out of the top four unless they are able to get back on track quickly.
Next Saturday Bilbao Athletic will have the opportunity to turn things around when they host Barakaldo at Lezama. Joseba Etxeberria will have over a week to get the team ready for what will be a crucial fixture at an important point in the season.
