Bilbao Athletic Celebrate Jon Morcillo

Jon Morcillo celebrates one of his two goals against Haro Deportivo (ZF)

After an impressive summer under new manager Joseba Etxeberria, Bilbao Athletic finally kicked off their season on Sunday night with a trip to newly-promoted Haro Deportivo. The fans at El Mazo made for a vibrant atmosphere and never stopped singing to support their team. With the fans pushing Haro forward, the hosts came out with great momentum.

Haro would strike first just three minutes into the game when Facu Ballardo beat Jokin Ezkieta with a free kick strike to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. The fans made the stadium even louder but Bilbao Athletic would quickly respond. Jon Morcillo pulled the Kumeak level in the 17th minute with a great individual play and the momentum began to swing to the visitors. Neither side would be able to break the deadlock before the end of the half.

Coming out of the break, Bilbao Athletic immediately took more control of the match. Morcillo would score a second in the 50th minute to give the team a 2-1 lead and they weren’t finished. Four minutes later Morcillo nearly completed his hat trick but the shot was saved and fell to Andoni Tascón who finished it off for the third goal. Dani Vivian added a fourth goal in the 71st minute to secure a deserved 4-1 win for Bilbao Athletic, though the team did struggle defensively at times.

Taking all three points is always a great way to start the season, especially for a team that struggled away from home last year. Additionally, with Ewan Urain unavailable due to injury Basconia striker Ruben Azcona made his Bilbao Athletic debut, coming on for Tascón in the 84th minute. The Kumeak will try to build on their impressive win next Sunday when they welcome Calahorra to Lezama.
