After what has been a historic start to the season Bilbao Athletic have started to come back down to earth. The Kumeak suffered a surprising loss to Burgos two weeks ago in part due to an early red card, but seemed to quickly turn things around with a convincing 4-1 win over Unionistas at Lezama in the following match. However, Joseba Etxeberria’s side would be unable to build on the momentum.
On Sunday Bilbao Athletic traveled to struggling Guijuelo where they found an opponent desperate for a positive result and playing with unmatched intensity. Though the Kumeak controlled possession for the most part they found themselves down 1-0 after just 27 minutes. Guijuelo’s Pablo Espina opened up the scoring with a goal at the near post that sent the stadium into a frenzy.
Bilbao Athletic would have to settle for largely set pieces and long shots as Guijuelo held a very organized back line. In the rare moments when the Kumeak looked close to setting up promising chances the final ball was missing and the hosts where quick to clear. Meanwhile, the hosts tried to make the most of their opportunities with a flurry of chances in front of goal late in the game as Bilbao Athletic scrambled to take back control.
After hitting the post, Guijuelo would weather a storm of Bilbao Athletic opportunities before doubling their lead in the 86th minute. A loose ball fell to Cristobal Gil who tucked a shot into the far post to give the hosts a 2-0 lead which would stand as the final score. The loss saw Bilbao Athletic lose their place at the top of table with Logroñés taking a one point lead. Now with something to prove, the Kumeak will be eager to retake the lead on Sunday when they host Izarra at Lezama.
