From the opening kickoff, it was clear that Ander Capa and Marc Cucurella were going to be the most important battle throughout the match. Both players committed a foul in the first minutes and Capa was quickly shown a yellow card. The game was wide open and it wouldn’t take long for the first goal to come in the form of a Raúl García at the far post to give Athletic an early lead.
After forcing a turnover, Iñaki Williams played the ball out wide to Capa who settled and put in a cross to García who was making a late run into the box. There was nothing the Getafe goalkeeper could do to stop the Basques from jumping ahead on the scoreboard. Athletic were off to a roaring start but it would be shortlived. Jaime Mata would equalize in the 12 minute, beating Yeray to a Cucurella cross inside the box.
Getafe’s goal gave the hosts added momentum and they began to take control of the game. Athletic were pinned back into the own third and weathered a storm of dangerous crosses into the box. As time passed the Basques started to regain their rhythm and created two small chances before the halftime whistle. Oscar De Marcos nearly set up Raúl García for another goal, but the pass was cleared and the winger suffered an ankle injury on the play. Gaizka Larrazabal came on for De Marcos to make his first team debut.
Coming out of the break Getafe were pushing for a quick goal. It would take roughly 10 minutes for Athletic to start to take control as both sides continued to trade attacks and defend well. The Basques would get a chance to take the lead in the 62nd minute when Larrazabal cut inside with space and three teammates running into the box. However, the winger put in a low cross which went right to the goalkeeper.
With a draw looking very likely, Gaizka Garitano brought on Aritz Aduriz which gave Athletic another boost. Ander Capa nearly set up Aduriz twice but the Getafe defense was there to clear the ball for corner kicks. In the end, neither side would be able to find the elusive winner as the match ended in a fair 1-1 draw to give both teams one point. Athletic will now turn their attention to the first Basque Derby of the season as Real Sociedad will visit San Mamés on Friday night.
