The Holiday break has come to an end and Athletic club were back on the field Monday night as they looked to take all three points from Celta Vigo. Manager Gaizka Garitano tinkered with the lineup all week during training and decided to sit Aritz Aduriz and Markel Susaeta, choosing instead to play Oscar de Marcos on the right wing. It would be a difficult game for the Basques who were desperate to win their first game away from home.
Athletic attacked well at the start, playing passes in behind the defense and winning back possession. The Lion would then open up the scoring in the 19th minute thanks to a beautiful run from Iñaki Williams. After beating his defender the forward played a low cross into the box where Iker Muniain was able to run on to the ball and finish the chance to give Athletic an early 1-0 lead.
At this point the game began to open up more and Celta Vigo built momentum. Athletic defended well but their hosts were controlling the pace of play. Minutes ticked away until stoppage time was added which would prove fateful. A corner kick saw Fran Béltran score the equalizer just before halftime to send both sides into the break locked in a 1-1 scoreline.
Athletic had a lot of work to do in the second half to turn things around and they started strong. In the 54th minute Iago Herrerín played a long ball all the way forward that Iñaki Williams ran on to it and was able to beat the keeper to give Athletic the 2-1 lead. The goal gave Athletic the energy and momentum needed to take control of the match at Balaídos.
The rest of the game was full of drama as both sides had chances to create goals and thing got even more tense when the referee added 6 minutes of stoppage time. Despite a late push from the hosts, Athletic defended well and held the 2-1 lead until the final whistle. The victory secured 3 huge points and sees Athletic climb into 16th in the La Liga table.
