Bilbao Athletic were eager to bounce back from Wednesday’s disappointing loss to Haro at Lezama and keep their place in the promotional playoff zone of the table. The team traveled to Calahorra on Sunday expecting another challenging match and were pushed until the final seconds but managed to secure all three points.
The Kumeak struck first in just the 7th minute with a great play from a throw in. Iñigo Baqué settled the ball and beat the keeper with a long strike to put Bilbao Athletic up 1-0. Unfortunately, lead was short-lived. Calahorra immediately went on the offensive and equalized nearly 20 minutes later from a counter attack.
Moments later Calahorra would take the lead from a set piece opportunity. Despite playing well in attack, Bilbao Athletic struggled at the back and their hosts took advantage. However, the Kumeak refused to let the game slip away and leveled the score at 2-2 with a goal from Juan Artola just before the break.
Both sides traded chances throughout the second half and the match looked to be headed for a draw until the 88th minute. Imanol García de Albéniz tucked a shot inside the far post to give Bilbao Athletic a late 3-2 lead and the victory. The win saw the Cachorros move to just three points off of second placed Cultural Leonesa who will visit Lezama next Sunday in one of the biggest games of the season.
