Bilbao Athletic have been one of the best teams in all of Segunda B this season and entered the weekend on a nine-game unbeaten streak. Joseba Etxeberria’s side had scored 31 goals in the opening 11 matches, but faced major adversity in Sunday’s match against Burgos. An early red card shown to Imanol Garcia de Albeniz left the Kumeak playing with 10 men for over an hour and proved to be the difference maker.
Despite the disadvantage, Bilbao Athletic were very organized in defense and made things difficult for their hosts with Jokin Ezkieta making a few big saves. The Kumeak were even able to create a few chances on counter attacks but the first half would eventually end with the game still scoreless. Bilbao Athletic wouldn’t be able to bend forever and finally broke when Verdu opened the scoring in the 62nd minute with a header right in front of goal.
Bilbao Athletic relentlessly searched for an equalizer with the best opportunities coming from corner kicks, but the goal proved elusive. Burgos would double their lead in the 90th minute to finish the game at 2-0 and hand Etxeberria’s team their first loss in 10 matches. Bilbao Athletic still sit at the top of the table following the defeat and will host Unionistas at Lezama on Saturday with hopes of quickly getting back to their winning ways.
