Athletic officially wrapped up their trip to Germany on Sunday when the Lions faced off with Borussia Monchengladbach in their third friendly of the summer. The match Bundesliga side were the strongest team the Basques have seen so far during the preseason and gave Gaizka Garitano’s squad a real test. Having played just 24 hours earlier added to the difficulty but the players were up for the challenge.
It would only take 14 minutes for Athletic to open the scoring. Iñigo Córdoba tried to put in a cross from the left wing but the ball struck the arm of a defender and a penalty was awarded. Iñaki Williams stepped up to the spot and calmly beat the keeper to make it 1-0 in Germany.
Athletic wouldn’t get another clear in the first half other than a header Unai Nuñez but Borussia nearly equalized just before the break. Unai Simón was able to save s thunderous volley to keep the hosts from pulling the game level. Iago Herrerín would then take over in goal to start the second half and was forced to make his own spectacular stop as Borussia continued to push for the equalizer.
The Basques responded quickly with their own onslaught. After forcing a turnover at the top of the box, Williams was played through and slid a pass to Córdoba at the far post to double the lead. Borussia refused to give up and had two more chances, one of which saw them put the ball in the back of the net, but both times the offside flag was raised. Oihan Sancet nearly added a third goal in the final minutes when he struck the post, but the match ended soon after with Athletic leaving Germany with a 2-0 win and still unbeaten this preseason.
