After last weekend’s loss to Burgos, Bilbao Athletic were in need of a big win to protect their lead at the top of the table. The Kumeak welcomed Unionistas to Lezama on Saturday with hopes of taking all three points, but knew it would be a very challenging match. Oihan Sancet may have returned to the lineup, but Joseba Etxeberria was once again without a pure striker which made things much more complicated.
Neither side was able to take control to start the game, but that would soon change. Jon Morcillo won a penalty for Bilbao Athletic in the 18th minute and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way as he converted from the spot to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, Unionistas began to send more players forward in attack. The visitors caused problems for Bilbao Athletic who managed to hold strong defensively.
Unionistas would eventually score an equalizer just two minutes into the second half. Jokin Ezkieta made a great save on a free kick but was unable to keep the rebound out the back of the net. The match really began to open up at that point with both sides looking as though they could take the lead at any point. It would be Bilbao Athletic who scored next when Iñigo Baqué finished off a tremendous driven cross from Morcillo at the hour mark.
Despite having the lead once again, Bilbao Athletic still struggled to take control of the game. Unionistas were dangerous every time they took the ball forward and won a penalty from a counter attack. Ezkieta saved the shot, as well as the rebound this time, which gave the Kumeak the push they needed to finish the match. Oier Luengo would make it 3-1 by scoring from a Morcillo assist before Antonio Salado scored the fourth goal with a diving header in stoppage time.
Bilbao Athletic’s 4-1 win over Unionistas wasn’t an easy result. The match was much closer than the score would suggest, but Joseba Etxeberria’s side proved once again that they will fight for every point and the victory at San Mamés means the Kumeak will retain their place at the top of table ahead of next Sunday’s trip to Guijuelo.
