After last weekend’s embarrassing loss on the road to Cultural Leonesa, Bilbao Athletic were determined to right the ship on Saturday. The Kumeak welcomed Salamanca to Lezama and put in a solid team performance where every single player contributing at a very high level. Joseba Etxeberria had his side prepared for an important match and it showed on the field.
Bilbao Athletic enjoyed the vast majority of chances in the first half and were able to open the scoring after just 17 minutes. Imanol García de Albéniz sent in a beautiful cross to the far post which Juan Artola was able to direct into the back of the net to make it 1-0. It was Artola’s first goal for the team since being promoted from CD Basconia over the summer and he would add a second early in the second half from a Jon Morcillo corner kick.
Salamanca tried to get back into the game but found it extremely difficult to string passes together or create chances. Bilbao Athletic were in complete control of the match and weren’t finished scoring goals until the final seconds. Dani Vivian headed a corner past the goalkeeper in the 84th minute to make it 3-0 before Oihan Sancet expertly placed a shot from inside the box during the last play of the game to guide the team to a convincing 4-0 win at home.
Bilbao Athletic have picked up seven points from their opening four games and will look to increase their tally next weekend when the team travels to Navarra for a match against CD Tudelano. It will be yet another difficult fixture for the Kumeak who are one of the favorites to challenge for the promotional playoffs.
