Bilbao Athletic’s start to the season has been extraordinary. Joseba Etxeberria has quickly found the right balance, making the Kumeak the most dangerous attacking side in the Segunda B and benefitting from impressive consistency. The Basques have spent the past few weeks at the top of the table but put their lead on the line Saturday as they welcomed Real Valladolid Promesas at Lezama.
In what was expected to be one of the biggest games of the season, Bilbao Athletic were once again at their best. The Kumeak dominated their opponents from start to finish and were able to open up the scoring just 20 minutes into the match. A corner kick was sent to the far post and then directed back across the goal where Ewan Urain was waiting to head it in to make it 1-0. It was the striker second straight game with a goal.
Bilbao Athletic would double their lead in the 37th minute after being awarded a penalty. Urain held up play which allowed Juan Artola to receive the ball inside the box. The winger drew a foul and Jon Morcillo calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-0 from the spot. The halftime whistle soon followed with Etxeberria’s side in full control.
After the break, Valladolid came out firing and were able to pull a goal back from a corner kick. The visitors nearly equalized with their second just minutes later but Jokin Ezkieta left his line and forced a bad shot to prevent the goal. Just when it seemed as though Valladolid would get back into the game, Bilbao Athletic struck again when Oier Zarraga capitalized on the confusion following a corner kick to head the ball into the back of the net from outside the box.
Zarraga would score his second of the night late in the game when he beat a defender and blasted a low shot at goal. The keeper was able to get a hand to the ball, but not enough to keep it from rippling the net. Bilbao Athletic continued looking for more goals but the game would finally end 4-1 with the Cachorros taking all three points in sublime performance. Another difficult match awaits next weekend as the team will host third-place Logroñés at Lezama looking for another victory.
