Bilbao Athletic were desperate to end their three game winless streak on Saturday as they welcomed Barakaldo to Lezama. The team has struggled for form since Oihan Sancet was called up to the first team and injuries certainly haven’t made the situation any better. This weekend’s game was an opportunity to put the season back on track, however it was more of the same.
Barakaldo made Bilbao Athletic uncomfortable from the opening whistle and had the first chance of the game with a cross into the box. The Kumeak would soon get into the game when Jon Morcillo had a counter attack that resulted in a promising shot which the goalkeeper saved. Minutes later Imanol García de Albéniz tried to find Gorka Guruzeta alone at the far post for an easy goal but a defender managed to block the shot.
The game’s opening goal would finally come in the 41st minute when Barakaldo split the defense with a pass into the box. Delgado calmly tucked a shot into the far corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead just before the break. Down yet again, Bilbao Athletic knew they had a lot of work to do in the second half and came out looking for a quick equalizer.
Juan Artola nearly leveled the score by getting onto the end of a Jesús Areso pass in front of goal but the ball was just barely out of reach. The pair, and others, would constantly threaten the Barakaldo back line throughout the remainder of the game. After coming on a substitute Iñigo Baqué had his own opportunity to score with a chance set up by a beautifully weighted pass from Unai Vencedor but, yet again, nothing came of it.
Bilbao Athletic looked to finally have the equalizer late in the second half when Imanol was played through into the left side of the box. The left-back picked out Guruzeta running free to the far post but a defender made a sliding challenge to stop the ball before Barakaldo rushed to clear it off the line.
The Kumeak would be denied once more when Baqué sent a header from a corner kick on target but saw a Barakaldo defender make a diving header of his own to clear the ball off the line. Hands were raised in disbelief and heads were hung in frustration as the final whistle soon followed. The disappointing loss saw Bilbao Athletic fall to 4th in the league table and level on points with Real Sociedad B who play on Sunday and will host Joseba Etxeberria’s side next weekend.
