Bilbao Athletic extended their unbeaten streak to six straight games on Saturday, but for a time it looked as though the Kumeak were headed for defeat. Struggling Arenas Club visited Lezama for a Bizkaia Derby and pushed Joseba Etxeberria’s side to the very last seconds of the match. It would take a stoppage time goal to rescue a draw and secure a valuable point.
For the opening 45 minutes Bilbao Athletic were in complete control of the match. Oier Zarraga was nearly set up just feet in front of the goal but wasn’t able to get onto the end of the pass then later forced a diving save with a shot form outside the box. The best chances of the first half came in the 22nd minute when Gorka Guruzeta was played over the top of the defense and put a shot wide of the far post from a tight angle.
Arenas were much better coming out of the break and Jokin Ezkieta was called on quickly to make a big save. However, the goalkeeper would be unable to stop a counter attack minutes later which saw Arenas take a 1-0 lead. Now behind, Bilbao Athletic would commit even more players forward in attack and created several chances in the final 15 minutes.
Guruzeta put a shot over the crossbar, Andoni Tascón had an effort blocked inside the box, and it looked as though the match was headed towards a defeat. Bilbao Athletic continued searching for an equalizer and would finally be rewarded in the 92nd minute when Juan Artola forced a save from the goalkeeper. The rebound fell to Imanol García de Albéniz who immediately played the ball to Guruzeta for an easy goal.
Although Bilbao Athletic played well enough to take all three points the team will be satisfied with a draw in what was a difficult Derby. Saturday’s result was enough for the Kumeak to remain second in the league table and Bilbao Athletic will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Amorebieta.
