Athletic failed to score in Saturday’s loss to Atlético Madrid (LaLiga)

Athletic’s hopes of putting an end to their four-game winless streak were dashed on Saturday as the Basques fell 2-0 to Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. Gaizka Garitano made two changes to the lineup, bringing in Unai Núñez and Yuri Berchiche, but it wasn’t enough to tip the balance in favor of the Lions. Atlético were the superior side and it showed in the result.

The match was very open from kickoff with Athletic enjoying more possession. Iñigo Martinez nearly opened up the scoring just seconds in with a header from a corner kick, but Jan Oblak managed to make an incredible save. The stop stunned the Basques but they continued to attack in numbers and did well to create chances going forward. Minutes later Raúl García nearly set up Iñaki Williams with a strong cross but the ball was cleared before it could reach its target.

Atlético held their ground in defense and constantly looked to hit on the counter and were eventually rewarded. The hosts would strike in the 28th minute when Angel Correo beat Unai Núñez and played the ball to Saul who finished from close range to make it 1-0. Raúl García had a chance to equalize against his former team not long after but saw Oblak make yet another impressive save.

Gaizka Garitano made the first change in the 55th minute, bringing on Ibai Gómez for Iñigo Córdoba but the Lions were still unable to take the initiative. Atlético would double their lead in the 66th minute when a ball was sent across the face of the goal to Alvaro Morata who tapped the ball in to make it 2-0.

Despite bringing on Aritz Aduriz and Oscar De Marcos, Athletic were unable to get back into the game. The Lions opened up and sent more players forward which gave the home side more chances in attack. In the end, the match would end 2-0 with Athletic now five straight games without a win. The Basques will have the perfect chance to break the streak on Wednesday when they host bottom of the table Espanyol at San Mamés.
