Bilbao Athletic’s six game unbeaten streak finally came to an end on Saturday. The Kumeak fell 2-1 to Amorebieta at Urritxe in what was a rare disappointing performance. Joseba Etxeberria’s side struggled at times to control the game and mistakes cost the team three valuable points.
Amorebieta opened the scoring in the first minute of the game following confusion at the back. Dani Vivian and Oier Luengo tried to leave a long pass for Jokin Ezkieta but were put under pressure by Iñigo Orozko. Luengo failed the clear the ball and the Amorebieta forward put a shot between Ezkieta’s legs to give the home side a very early lead.
Jon Morcillo had two opportunities to level the score minutes later but saw his first shot saved by the goalkeeper before hitting the post with a second effort. Vivian then had a close shot of his own saved as did Gorka Guruzeta. Missing the chances would come back to cost Bilbao Athletic as Amorebieta doubled their lead in the 35th minute from a corner kick.
The Kumeak came out of the break with intensity which would pay off very quickly. In the 48th minute Imanol García de Albéniz put a low cross into the box which found Oier Zarraga. The midfielder then played a pass to Guruzeta who beat the goalkeeper to pull a goal back. From there, Bilbao Athletic turned up the pressure and created several more chances in front of goal.
Morcillo forced another diving save, Imanol his the post, and Luengo missed with a header from a corner kick before Guruzeta once again put the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately, the offside flag was up which was soon followed by the final whistle before the Kumeak could find the equalizer.
Despite the defeat, Bilbao Athletic remain second the table, though now 13 points off of first placed Logroñés. Joseba Etxeberria’s side will be back in action at Lezama next weekend in a match against Real Unión with three points on the line.
