Iñigo Vicente Makes First Team Debut In Loss To Cadíz

Iñigo Vicente was arguably the only shining light in Athletic’s 1-0 loss to Cadíz Thursday night. The Lions failed to score a single goal despite Cadíz having two players sent off and were beaten at San Mamés for the fourth consecutive game. However, Vicente made his first team debut in the second half and was a spark in an otherwise dismal attack.

“The only positive thing about this game is my debut,” Vicente said after the match. “I was really looking forward to this day. I’ve been waiting for it for a long time. I’m happy, but the important thing was to get the three points and it wasn’t achieved.”

Aside from the loss, Vicente was also sad to make his debut without fans in attendance. “A debut like this at San Mamés leaves you a bit cold, without all the fans who usually come,” he added. “Athletic’s fans are the best in the world. Playing here is the best in the world so not having them here is a pity.”

Vicente admitted that creating chances against Cadíz was frustrating. The visitors parked the bus in defense and Athletic struggled to find ways to break through the back line.

“We gave everything and we had several chances. After their first player was sent off they stayed back and it was difficult for us to create scoring chances. After the second red card we did everything we could. They played far behind and cleared every ball. The team tried, but couldn’t find the goal.”

Athletic go back on the road this weekend. “We play again in two days, we’re going to be ready to play against Alavés and go for the three points,” said Vicente. The Lions travel to Mendizorrotza on Sunday for a Basque Derby against Alavés.
