Athletic Club 0-1 Cadíz: Inexcusable Loss At San Mamés

Athletic failed to score against 9 man Cadíz (AC)

Athletic had a chance to build on Sunday’s big win over Eibar when the Lions hosted Cadíz at San Mamés. That didn’t happen. Despite thoroughly dominating possession in the first half, Cadíz were comfortable at the back. Athletic failed to create any real chances before the break and lacked creativity in the final third. Without any ideas to force Cadíz off their block, Athletic paid the price in the second half.

Immediately after the break Cadíz went down to 10 men after Carlos Akapo was shown a second yellow card. Despite the advantage, Athletic could capitalize. Cadíz took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute when a low cross into the box struck Unai López. The midfielder was unable to get a clean touch on the ball which deflected into the back of the net for an own goal.

With 20 minutes left to play Álvaro Negredo would also be shown a second yellow card. Even with two more players on the field Athletic struggled to create chances. Bringing on Oihan Sancet and Iñigo Vicente helped the Athletic attack, but Cadíz held strong in defense. The final whistle blew with Athletic losing to Cadíz at San Mamés for the first time in history.

Playing against a newly promoted side who had two players sent off should have been a big enough advantage for Athletic to take all three points. Even a draw would have been a disappointing result. Coming away empty handed at home is an inexcusable result. Athletic now turn their attention to Sunday’s trip to Alavés.
