Iago Herrerín will leave Athletic this summer, but has just six days left to find a new club. The goalkeeper recently asked to move on despite having one year left on his contract and the Basque giants agreed to facilitate his departure. Once Herrerín reaches an agreement with another club, he will be allowed to leave on a free transfer.

A number of clubs have expressed interest in Herrerín with Galatasaray the first to be linked with a move. The deal eventually fell through, but other teams in Turkey have also been in the mix.

“Following the unfortunate injury of Fernando Muslera, Galatasaray looked for a goalkeeper to replace the loss. My representative negotiated with Galatasaray, but we couldn’t reach an agreement. The new Super League club, Hatayspor, presented an offer to Athletic. I had other options as well.”

Over the past few weeks Besiktas have emerged as the most likely destination for Herrerín. Although the goalkeeper has yet to receive an offer, he admits that talks have been ongoing.

“I have one year left on my contract with Athletic, but there are several clubs that have been interested. We’re going to see what will happen. There are six days left until the market closes. We’re studying all the possibilities. The truth is that we haven’t received an offer from Besiktas, but I know that they are interested. Right now they’re talking to my agent.”

At this point Herrerín is simply waiting for a proposal and hints that he would like to join Besiktas. “Now, if Besiktas presents me with an official offer we will evaluate it,” he told Özgür Sancar of AS. “I’m excited to be able to play in Turkey. If the offer comes there’s no reason to reject it. I have one year left on my contract here, but we would solve it by talking to Athletic.”

In anticipation for the possible move, Herrerín spoke with Fabricio Agosto who spent two years as the Besiktas goalkeeper from 2016-2018. The conversation reinforced Herrerín’s willingness to play football in Turkey.

“I have spoken with Fabricio Ramírez and he’s told me many good things about the club. He says that Istanbul is an incredible city. Frankly he has impressed me with his vision of the club and of Turkey. Now I know much more about the great teams of Turkey such as Galatasaray, Besiktas, and Fenerbahçe.”

With the transfer window set to close on 5 October, clubs have little time left to finalize transfers. Iago Herrerín is looking forward to the possibility of joining Besiktas and hopes that he will receive an offer in the coming days.
