Unai López “I Managed To Score More Goals In One Game Than In All Of Last Year”

Unai López celebrates his first goal against Eibar (AC)

Unai López played the hero on Sunday in Athletic’s visit to Eibar. Making his first start of the season, López opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a sublime finish before netting a late brace to win the game at Ipurua.

“We know it’s a complicated field and how the game was going to go,” López told reporters after the game. “It was vital to win today, to take three valuable points at Ipurua. I’m happy for the victory and for scoring two goals.”

Eibar are always strong at home and have made games difficult for Athletic in recent meetings. López reiterated that playing at Ipurua was going to be a challenge, but was excited to score two goals in the win.

“We knew it was going to cost us because it’s always hard to win here, it’s complicated. We must give a lot of value to this victory because it’s not easy at all to win here. In the end I managed to score more goals in one game than in all of last year. Football is like that. I’m very happy. Scoring to goals for Athletic and helping the team win is beautiful to me.”

Following the win over Eibar, Athletic will host Cadíz on Thursday in the first home game of the season. “The next points are just as important,” said López. “We’re at the beginning and we have to try to get as many points as possible.” A victory at the Cathedral would see Athletic surge further up the La Liga table.
