Javi Martínez “I Don’t Know What Will Happen In The Next Few Days”

Javi Martínez celebrates his match winner for Bayern Munich in the UEFA Super Cup (AC)

Just a few days ago Javi Martínez’s return to Athletic looked certain. The 32-year-old was left out of Bayern Munich’s yearly picture and reports in Germany claimed a deal was essentially complete. In fact, BILD went as far to say that Martínez would no longer be called up for games ahead of the expected transfer.

Then things changed. Within hours reports in Bizkaia stated that the move was on the verge of falling through. Conflicting stories about Martínez’s wages and various transfer fee demands were cited as the primary reasons. Athletic’s financial limitations following the pandemic have left the club in a challenging position.

Still, the club hasn’t given up hope of bringing Martínez back to San Mamés this summer. The latest reports ensure that Athletic could still sign the midfielder, though it won’t be easy. Meanwhile, Martínez played the hero on Thursday night, scoring the winning goal in stoppage time and giving Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory over Sevilla to lift the UEFA Super Cup.

“I don’t know what will happen in the next few days,” Martínez told reporters after the game. “I don’t know if it will be my last game with Bayern. To say goodbye like this would be something incredible. Today I just want to celebrate a little with my teammates, but we have a game on Sunday. If I’m there on Sunday, I’ll give everything. As long as I’m here I’ll defend this shirt.”

Martínez was then asked directly if he will return to Athletic this summer. “I don’t know, I don’t know,” he responded with a chuckle. Despite recently asking Bayern Munich to help facilitate a move back to Athletic, an agreement has proved elusive. The two clubs have until the transfer window closes on 5 October to finalize a transfer.
