Jon Sillero Signs Contract Renewal With Athletic Club Through 2023, Joins Numancia On Loan

Jon Sillero has been a staple in the Bilbao Athletic squad for four seasons. As one of the most highly touted defenders to come through Lezama in recent years, Sillero earned the captain’s armband and established himself as a leader both on and off the field. Now 22 years old, Sillero looked to be entering his final year with the club but has instead secured his future in Bilbao.
Following impressive preseason performances with the first team, Sillero has signed a contract renewal with Athletic which will run through 2023. The club announced the deal on Monday while also revealing that Sillero has joined Numancia on loan for the upcoming season. Information about Sillero’s new release clause was not included in the announcement.
Coming through Lezama, Sillero was an exceptional young right-back but transitioned to center-back over the past two years. With his path to the first team still challenging, Sillero hopes to prove himself while away on loan this season. Meanwhile Aitor Paredes, Antxon Jaso, and Xabier Arberas will now compete to earn Jon Sillero’s starting role in the back line.
