Gaizka Garitano “These Games Help Us Prepare For The Game Against Eibar”
Athletic played two friendly matches against Sevilla on Friday night, taking advantage of the two-week break until next weekend’s league match against Eibar. The Lions lost the first 2-1, but picked up an impressive 1-0 win in the following game. Although the final result doesn’t really matter in friendlies, putting in a good performance helps the team build a rhythm before the trip to Ipurua.
“The team had a good training session against an opponent who is one of the best teams in Europe,” Gaizka Garitano said after the games. “It was good to help us recover some players who had a little preseason. This week we have done a lot of training and we wanted many of those who haven’t played as much in the preseason to have their minutes.”
Every team had a shorter preseason than usual due to the recent pandemic. It’s been much more difficult for teams to get in proper shape, so playing during the break was important for Athletic. “We felt better physically, which is good,” Garitano continued. “These games serve to reinforce the players and prepare for the game against Eibar.”
Unfortunately, Yeray left the first game with an apparent groin strain. The defender could be in danger of missing the Basque Derby, though Garitano is hopeful that won’t be the case. “Let’s wait and see what Yeray’s situation is, I don’t think the injury is very serious,” he said calmly. Athletic will have the next two days off before returning to training ahead of the trip to Eibar.
