Bilbao Athletic Top Gernika 1-0 In Second Preseason Friendly

Juan Artola nearly found the back of the net in the second half (AC)

Bilbao Athletic continued their impressive start to the preseason on Wednesday, beating Gernika 1-0 in a trip to Urbieta. Jon Guruzeta assisted Álvaro Núñez in the first half for the winning goal, while the defense was excellent. The Kumeak have yet to concede a single goal over the first two summer friendlies and look strong ahead of the new season.

Joseba Etxeberria took the opportunity to give important minutes to several new players. Julen Agirrezabala, Ander Lorente, Xabier Arberas, Gorka Agirre, Jon Guruzeta, and Jon Cabo all made the starting lineup. Guruzeta nearly opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a shot that was narrowly saved by the goalkeeper. However, the 20-year-old would provide the pass for Núñez to score close to the half hour mark.

Bilbao Athletic retained control in the second half with Nico Williams and Juan Artola nearly finding the back of the net. Ultimately, there would be no more goals. The Kumeak deserved the win, but could have had an even larger margin of victory if not for a great display from the Gernika goalkeeper. Etxeberria’s team travel to Burgos on Saturday for the third friendly of the summer.
