Jon Morcillo Makes First Team Debut In Loss To Granada

Finishing continued to be a problem for Athletic in the team’s La Liga opener at Las Cármenes. In the first half the Lions dominated play and created several chances, but had no goals to show for it at the break. Granada scored twice soon after the restart, sending Athletic home with a 2-0 loss and a lot to think about.

In a game full of disappointment, Jon Morcillo was one of the few bright spots. The 21-year-old was named to the starting lineup and put in a solid performance in his first team debut.

“I’m happy to debut, but it’s always nice to debut with a victory and that couldn’t be,” Morcillo told Athletic TV after the game. “I’m very, very happy, but the shame is debuting without fans, without my family and loved ones being able to see me. I know they supported me at home.”

Morcillo impressed as one of Athletic most effective players going forward. With 14 crosses, 2 key passes, and 2 shots Morcillo showed the ability to make an impact in the final third. Athletic failed to score a single goal, but the starlet ensured that the team did everything possible to try to turn the game around.

“In the first half we created quite a few chances. We have opportunities to score and go ahead, but then in the second half they scored after hardly creating anything. With that cross they scored and it hurt us a lot. Once they scored the second we were paddling against the current for the rest of the game. We did everything possible. We made five changes and attacked with everything, with crosses and chances created. If Williams’s shot went in maybe everything would have changed a bit, but it hit the post.”

Following the splendid performance against Granada, Morcillo earned more minutes going forward. Athletic need help scoring goals to compete for a top seven finish this season and Jon Morcillo offers the quality to make the attack better.
