Jesús Areso Changes Agents In Search Of Athletic Exit

Jesús Areso has no intentions of signing a new contract (AC)

Jesús Areso plans to leave Athletic, but that may not happen until next year. Once touted as the club’s right-back of the future, the 21-year-old recently rejected a renewal offer with one year left on his contract. Areso doesn’t see a clear path to the first team and has no plans to sign a new deal. With other clubs showing interest in him, Areso wants out of Bilbao.

Athletic have been here before. Two years ago Alex Remiro put the club in the same situation, albeit for different reasons. The goalkeeper refused to renew in the final year of his contract and Athletic responded by sending a clear message.

Remiro was benched for the season and didn’t play a single minute. Once his contract expired Remiro signed with Real Sociedad. By the looks of it, Athletic intend to give Areso the same type of treatment until his deal runs out.

Areso was originally called up to spend the preseason training with the first team before leaving on loan. Immediately after rejecting the renewal offer he was sent back down to Bilbao Athletic. The club has yet to provide a formal update, but the expectation is that he won’t play any minutes this season.

In light of the situation Areso has changed agents, per a report from Radio Marca Bilbao. Interestingly, the defender has signed with the same representatives that oversaw Remiro’s exit two years ago. The report suggests that Areso could “follow the same path” though he’s also received interest from the likes of Leicester City.

If a club were to make an offer for Areso this summer there’s a chance that Athletic could be willing to sell. However, given his refusal to sign a renewal it’s unlikely that a convincing bid will turn up. At this point all signs point to Jesús Areso sitting out the final year of his contract before leaving Athletic next summer.
