Oihan Sancet Reportedly Turned Down Offer From Monaco In 2018

Oihan Sancet is ready to become a star at San Mamés (AC)

The summer of 2018 was incredible for Oihan Sancet. Then just 18 years old, Sancet was called up by manager Eduardo Berizzo to spend the preseason with the first team. At the time Sancet was coming off of an impressive season with Athletic’s Juvenil A side. The starlet turned heads at Lezama and planned to split time between the first team and Bilbao Athletic.

Unfortunately, Sancet suffered a torn ACL in early September and had to wait for his chance at first team football. The opportunity came last season when Sancet made his debut and went on to feature in 19 matches. This year, Sancet figures to be a key player at San Mamés and star in the making.

Since joining Athletic in 2015 Sancet always looked destined to reach the first team. However, it wasn’t until 2018 that he saw a real chance of achieving that dream. Sancet showed the potential to become something special and other clubs took notice as well.

Monaco fixed their gaze on Sancet. According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, the French club made an offer to the midfielder in 2018. Sancet rejected the approach, promptly informed Athletic, and then signed a new contract through 2024 which raised his release clause above €40 million.

Over the years Monaco have earned a reputation for developing young players who then sign for bigger clubs to continue their careers. Sancet would have had that opportunity, and likely higher wages, had he accepted the offer two years ago. Instead, Oihan Sancet showed his loyalty to Athletic by committing his future to the Zurigorri with a new contract.
