Athletic’s La Liga Opener Against Granada Rescheduled To Saturday
Athletic won’t be playing Granada on Friday night as previously planned. Following another battle over scheduling between La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation, the game has been moved. Instead, Athletic’s trip to Los Cármenes will take place on Saturday with kickoff set for 6:30pm.
For the past few years La Liga and the RFEF have been at war over scheduling. Constant complaints from fans over Monday and Friday night games saw the RFEF intervene with the promise of keeping matches exclusively on the weekends. Last season the two entities agreed to negotiate schedules, but more issues arose when the new season schedule was announced.
La Liga originally planned for the opening weekend of games to include Monday and Friday night fixtures. The league argued that there was no need to consult the RFEF with fans not allowed in the stadiums. As a result, the Spanish Football Federation appealed the schedule which resulted in the games being moved to the weekend.
The ruling comes less than 48 hours before Athletic were set to take the field against Granada. Gaizka Garitano’s team gain an extra day to prepare for the game with hopes of taking all three points away from home. A final court hearing is set for 6 October to determine whether La Liga or the RFEF have the right to control Monday and Friday night scheduling.
