Unai Vencedor “I Think We’re Going To Be On The Right Track”

Friday’s friendly at Estadio Municipal Carlos Tartiere was another good test for Athletic. Gaizka Garitano’s decision to rest most of the starters gave more valuable minutes to younger players and once again they took advantage. Oier Zarraga and Asier Villalibre scored to lead Athletic to a 2-2 draw, but Unai Vencedor was the most important player on the field for the Basques.

“The truth is that we have seen each other well,” Vencedor told Athletic TV after the game. “I think we played a good game, a serious game in defense. We scored the first own goal and then we tied the score, but there are good feelings. We played important minutes and I have seen the team well. I think we’re going to be on the right track.”

Athletic play the final friendly of the summer tomorrow with Eibar visiting Lezama. “It’s going to be a different match against Eibar, a Primera team with a lot of quality,” Vencedor added. “We hope to win and leave with a good taste in our mouths for the starts of the season.”

Vencedor hopes to have a place in Garitano’s team this season and has done well to impress the manager. “It’s clear that the most important thing in the preseason is to pick up pace, have minutes, gain experience, and work hard as a team. From there the coach chooses the eleven who play.” For now, Unai Vencedor is expected to split time between Bilbao Athletic and the first team.
