Athletic Announce Friendlies Against Sevilla Set For 18 September
The start of the La Liga season is going to be strange. After opening the campaign on the road against Granada, Athletic will have two weeks until the following match. Initially, the Lions were scheduled to host Barcelona in Matchday 2 but the game has been postponed until January. Clubs that competed in Europe won’t start the year until a later date which Athletic with a gap in the schedule.
Having a break could be beneficial so early in the season. Athletic plan to take advantage of the time off and have announced two friendlies against Sevilla scheduled for 18 September. The games will be played in Murcia at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm in place of the Barcelona fixture, although there’s been no word on how the scrimmages will be organized.
“It will be good for us to continue playing and preparing because we have players at different levels of fitness in the squad,” Gaizka Garitano said about the friendlies. “Some have been training for 20 days and are very well physically. Others have trained very little and haven’t even played yet. That break will be good for us to have minutes, especially for those who joined this week.”
Following the Sevilla friendlies, Athletic travel to Eibar for the second game of the season. The team will then play the first home game against Cádiz days later in a return to San Mamés. Athletic intend to challenge for Europe this year and hope to get off to a strong start.
