Athletic Club Monitoring Eibar Goalkeeper Jon Mikel Magunagoitia
Over the years Lezama has earned the reputation of being one of football’s greatest youth academies for goalkeepers. Players like Aitor Fernández, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Alex Remiro, and Unai Simón have all come through the system in the last decade and there are many more who could follow in the near future.
In many ways Athletic have an excess of talent at the goalkeeper position, but the club is always looking to bring in the best players from the area to improve quality and add more competition. According to a report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo, Athletic are closely monitoring Eibar goalkeeper Jon Mikel Magunagoitia who could join for free next summer.
Magunagoitia currently plays for Vitoria, Eibar’s subsidiary in the Tercera, and ended last season as the top goalkeeper in the Fourth Division by conceding only 10 goals in 26 games. Having just turned 20 last month, Magunagoitia is considered to be one of the top young goalkeepers in the Basque Country and has even represented the Euskadi U18 team on occasion.
Despite training with the Eibar first team this summer, Magunagoitia has refused a renewal offer from the club with one year left on his current deal. If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement Magunagoitia would be free to negotiate with other clubs starting in January. Athletic will continue to follow Jon Mikel Magunagoitia’s situation in the months ahead with the possibility of trying to bring the starlet to Lezama.
