Three Clubs Chasing Athletic Winger Gaizka Larrazabal

Following an unsuccessful debut season with the Athletic first team, Gaizka Larrazabal looks to be on the way out of the club. The 22-year-old was expected to leave on loan this summer, but with just one year left on his contract the two sides have been negotiating a different alternative.

On Friday Radio Marca Bilbao reported that Larrazabal will leave Athletic for free this summer with the club retaining a buy-back clause. Without a clear place in the first team the club sees it best for Larrazabal to leave and doing so by terminating his contract would get wages off the books following the pandemic. Including a return clause would ensure that Athletic could bring the winger back in the future.

So far three clubs have expressed interest in signing Larrazabal, per Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo. Segunda sides Rayo Vallecano and Ponferradina, coached by former Athletic players Andoni Iraola and Jon Pérez ‘Bolo’ respectively, have been in contact with the player. Meanwhile, newly promoted Cadíz have also been linked with a move for Larrazabal.

Ultimately, the decision will be up to Larrazabal. As long as Athletic are granted a buy-back clause the club will allow Gaizka Larrazabal to choose his next destination. Athletic will also permit Gorka Guruzeta to leave this summer for free with a buy-back clause and are considering the same move for Andoni López with both players in the final year of their contracts.
