Jon Morcillo celebrates Iker Muniain’s goal (AC)

Jon Morcillo was one of eight Athletic youth players to make their unofficial first team debut on Saturday against Logroñés. With so many absences in the squad, Gaizka Garitano turned to starlets who had the opportunity to impress the manager. Morcillo took his chance and was arguably Athletic’s best player in the second half.

“I’m very happy to have debuted with Athletic in a friendly,” Morcillo told Athletic TV after the match. “I found myself very well, but in the end a victory wasn’t meant to be. They scored some goals that we can’t allow, but my feelings are good.”

Morcillo joined the club back in 2016, signing with Basconia from Cultural Durango. Since then he’s become one of Lezama’s most electric forwards and has the chance to earn a place in the first team this summer.

“These are the first sensations, the first friendly. I think I did fine. We faced a difficult team, mistakes were made, but we have to continue training. I’m proud to have achieved what I’ve wanted since childhood, it’s a dream, and now it’s time to continue demonstrating and working to convince the coach.”

Along with Morcillo seven other players saw their first minutes with the senior squad. Nico Serrano, Beñat Prados, and Aitor Paredes started the first half while Jon Sillero, Oier Luengo, Oier Zarraga, and Ewan Urain came on after the break along with Morcillo. The players will have the day off on Sunday and will return to training the following day ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against Alavés.
