Wolves Reportedly Eyeing A Move For Unai Núñez
For most of last season Unai Núñez’s future was constantly the biggest topic of discussion in Bilbao. The young defender, frustrated by a lack of chances, has already rejected three renewal offers from Athletic with his current contract set to expire in 2023. More importantly, Núñez has a release clause of only €30 million at the moment which makes him an affordable target for most clubs, albeit the pandemic has impact everyone financially.
Since the pandemic, however, news surrounding Núñez has gone silent. Clubs like Arsenal, Everton, Milan, Monaco, and West Ham had all been heavily linked with the 23-year-old but interest seems to have died down. At his age and price Núñez is still a very attractive option and other clubs has now started to take notice.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Wolves are following Núñez closely with manager Nuno said to be high on the young defender. Wolves generally play a system with three center-backs which would likely guarantee minutes for Núñez along with the opportunity to compete for European football in the Premier League.
At this point Wolves haven’t had any contact with either Núñez or Athletic. The club is firm, any club would have to pay Núñez’s release clause and it’s unclear if Wolves are even willing to meet that price following the pandemic.
Núñez is currently at home isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 in the initial medical screening two weeks ago. The defender has yet to be cleared to return to training. Furthermore, there’s no guarantee that Núñez would accept an offer from another club. It’s no secret that he’s been entertaining the idea of leaving Athletic, but sources claim that he wants to play the Copa del Rey final before possibly making an exit. “My dream is to win a title with Athletic,” Unai Núñez said back in March.
