Bayern Munich Put €12 Million Price Tag On Athletic Target Javi Martínez
Javi Martínez dominated the headlines on Thursday. At first, reports surfaced which claimed that the Bayern Munich midfielder was close to finalizing a transfer to Real Sociedad. Hours later Martínez’s representatives firmly denied having any contact at all with La Real and stated that the only way he would return to Spain would be to sign with Athletic.
On the same day Gaizka Garitano revealed that the club is still working on possible transfers despite Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta ruling out any moves weeks prior. “Our squad can be improved,” said Garitano who also admitted that he has asked the club for new signings this summer.
Any transfers will be difficult for Athletic given the current financial situation following the pandemic. “Until the market is closed everyone has to be vigilant,” Garitano said. “We are open to improving the team and they are working well on that. If not, those of us who are here are going to look forward with the utmost enthusiasm. I don’t know if any coach who doesn’t ask for the squad to be improved, but I understand the difficulty of finding someone affordable.”
Athletic’s haven’t given up on signing Javi Martínez this summer and already know the price it will take. Bayern Munich are willing to sell the 31-year-old but are demanding at least €12 million in return, per Juanma Velasco of AS. With the transfer window set to close in October there’s still time to work out a deal with Bayern.
Alex Berenguer is still a target for Athletic as well. Velasco’s report suggests that the winger could be purchased from Torino for €8 million and as the summer continues that price could drop. In total, Athletic could realistically sign both Javi Martínez and Alex Berenguer for a combined fee of €20 million, but money is still an issue for the Basque giants.
