West Ham In Pole Position To Sign Iago Herrerín
Iago Herrerín’s request to leave Athletic has been granted. Although the Basque giants have been holding out for another club to make an offer for the goalkeeper, there’s been nothing so far. As a result, Athletic and Herrerín have agreed to terminate the final year of his contract.
The release won’t be announced until Herrerín has chosen his next destination. With numerous clubs having contacted the 32-year-old Herrerín is expected to make a decision within the next few days.
One thing is certain, Herrerín won’t be staying in Spain. Despite having interest from a handful of La Liga teams, namely Celta Vigo, the veteran goalkeeper wants to move abroad and avoid having to play against Athletic. Lucky for him there’s been plenty of intrigue from foreign clubs as well.
Galatasaray were the first club to be linked with a move for Herrerín following his request to leave Athletic. Other clubs from Turkey, including Hatayspor, have also shown interest along with some from Greece, Italy, and Portugal. However, a switch to England now seems to be the most likely path for Herrerín.
According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, three Premier League clubs have heavily pursued Herrerín over the past week. Everton want to bring in Herrerín as competition for Jordan Pickford while Crystal Palace have identified the Lezama prospect as their top choice to replace Vicente Guaita who could be on the way out this summer.
Ultimately, West Ham lead the race to sign Herrerín. The Hammers plan to make a switch at goalkeeper this summer and have shown the most interest in Herrerín of any club. Having the chance to play in England is said to be a big selling point for Herrerín, but he also wants to choose the destination that will give him the chance to start and play consistent minutes.
Once Herrerín has agreed to personal terms with another club Athletic will formally terminate his contract. Poor treatment from fans, as well as a lack of minutes, has made Herrerín unhappy in Bilbao and the club is willing to help facilitate his amicable exit. Over the next few days Iago Herrerín will finalize a move away with Jokin Ezkieta taking his place in the squad behind Unai Simón.
