Ibai Gómez Rules Out Having Surgery On Fractured Clavicle

Ibai Gómez has started the recovery process for his fractured clavicle (AC)

Following last year’s disappointing campaign, Ibai Gómez is determined to prove himself at Athletic. Since returning to the club Gómez hasn’t had relevance that was expected and came into preseason training last week eager to turn his situation around. Unfortunately, things have gotten off to a bad start.

On Wednesday Gómez suffered a fractured right clavicle during training at Lezama, putting him at risk of missing the start of the La Liga season. The club’s medical team have been weighing up the need for surgery which would sideline the winger for roughly 12 weeks, though an operation doesn’t seem to be necessary.

There’s only two ways to repair the fracture: either undergo surgery or immobilize the bone and let it heal on its own. With Gómez’s fracture being a clean break the 30-year-old prefers not to have surgery, per Robert Basic of El Correo. The medical team will make a final decision in the days ahead, but for now it doesn’t look like Gómez will be going under the knife.

The good news is that Gómez has already begun the recovery process and is expected to miss about five weeks if everything goes according to plan. If there are no unexpected issues, Ibai Gómez would theoretically miss the first three games of the season before the international break, but the veteran is confident that he can return even sooner and has already started running exercises at Lezama.
