Athletic Start Group Training After Passing PCR Tests
Having six players test positive during the initial PCR screening threw a wrench into Athletic’s preseason plans. The team was originally scheduled to start full training on Thursday, but instead protocol dictated that the players begin with individual training sessions until the second round of testing.
On Friday the players who passed the first screening underwent the necessary second round of tests which thankfully all came back negative. As a result, Athletic were able to start group training at Lezama on Saturday with 25 players available to manager Gaizka Garitano. Midfielder Peru Nolaskoain, who has been dealing with a right ankle issue, continued recovery work.
The six players that tested positive – Iñaki Williams, Unai López, Oihan Sancet, Unai Núñez, Gaizka Larrazabal, and Iñigo Córdoba – will be tested again next week. The protocol in place requires them to remain isolated for 10 days before being tested again. The players will need to pass two consecutive tests within 72 hours to be cleared to train. That being the case, they will miss at least 15 days which would be half of the preseason.
