Athletic Aim To Finalize Unai Simón And Raúl García Renewals Before Start Of Season
Signing players may not be possible this summer. Funds are very limited for Athletic following the pandemic and the club will once again trust in Lezama to strengthen the first team. At the same time, protecting current players is the top priority and renewals for top stars will be very important.
Before the health crisis Athletic were already in contract talks with Unai Simón and Ander Capa. Simón established himself as one of La Liga’s best goalkeepers last season and the club plans to reward him with a new deal while also raising his release clause. Capa is in a similar situation and his current deal is set to expire in 2022.
Meanwhile, Raúl García is entering the final year of his contract with the club and both sides are eager to reach an agreement for an extension. The 34-year-old led the team with 15 goals last season and will continue to be a key player moving forward.
All three players have made it clear that they want to stay at Athletic, making negotiations fairly straightforward and simple. For now talks are still ongoing, but the club aims to finalize renewals for Simón and García before the start of the new season, per Juanma Mallo of El Correo. Capa is said to already have an offer on the table.
Simón is both the present and the future of the Athletic goal. Despite attracting interest from other clubs, the 23-year-old has made it clear that he has no desire to leave Athletic. By signing a new contract Simón will significantly raise his wages and his €50 million release clause could possibly double. García is expected to sign a one-year extension and wants to stay at San Mamés as long as he can contribute to the team.
